Summer School

Moving to a completely different country, to an English speaking environment… The transfer to UWC Maastricht can be quite challenging. That’s why we organize a Summer School every year.

The purpose of the UWCM Summer School is to give new UWCM students in MYP5 or DP1, the time to transition from their home country and school to a new life on the UWCM campus. Through the summer course, students have time to get to know the school buildings, make long-lasting friendships, and most importantly build confidence in English – all they need to know to start the DP feeling safe and ready.

Learning by doing

The trick to effective language learning is experience. Whatever we learn about, is immediately applicable to real life. We use interactive and engaging teaching and learning strategies in order to put what we have learnt into practice beyond the classroom. At the heart of the classroom-based programme is communication. This intensive language acquisition course invites students to develop their communication skills through a range of hands-on activities which are directly translatable onto future experiences at UWC Maastricht.

Although English is the language of instruction at our school, we realise that UWCM experience is not just about language. Therefore, as part of the course, we provide students with information about all the subject groups and the subjects within, and guide them with the development of their subject package. In addition, various subject teachers lead taster sessions so that the students can get an idea of what these subjects involve. The students are also introduced to the academic vocabulary survival kit, and given plenty of support to understand the DP and prepare for the start of the academic year.

Activities

Alongside the academic focus, students participate in Life Skills sessions designed to prepare them for life on campus. From learning how to organize and prioritize study time to healthy eating and how to do laundry!

Activities during those two weeks will range from meal planning, finding your way to the supermarket, keeping the residences clean, learning to ride a bike to discovering the beautiful countryside here in Maastricht and the local area.

Last but not least, Summer School students get their first opportunity to provide service in a non-profit organisation nearby Maastricht.

For the school year 2020-2021 there will be no Summer School. For more information: summerschool@uwcmaastricht.nl
