Science Lab Technician/ Technisch Onderwijs Assistent (Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Studies and Biology)

UWC Maastricht has a part time vacancy (0,8- being 4 days a week) for a  SCIENCE LAB TECHNICIAN. The new colleague will work in the Science team in our Secondary School. The Science team consists of 15 teachers in the subjects Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Environmental Studies, with a head of department and 1 other Lab technician.

The Science department teaches our students in Secondary School between the ages of 11 and 19. We offer a challenging and interesting job in a vibrant community and a great team.
For immigration reasons we unfortunately -for this vacancy- need to hire staff with an EU passport. Candidates from outside EU will not receive a work permit for this vacancy.

The successful profile & qualifications

We are looking for someone with experience as a Laboratory Technician, preferably in Secondary Education. You have at least a degree at MBO level as a Laboratory Assistent. A good understanding of the Dutch Language is helpful. A good level of English is needed but with a basic level, you will learn more on the job.

The job:

  • Organise the technical support to the science department by preparing resources, aiding in developing parts of the science curriculum and assembling apparatus.
  • Advice teachers on how to meet goals with the right set up of practicals and the feasibility of practicals.
  • Guide students in their own experimental research and practicals and discuss solutions for the questions asked by the student.
  • Develop and assist in practical school research, practicals, assignments and demonstrations.
  • Carry out risk assessments for technician activities.
  • Assist in practical lessons in the class room and field trips (only with permission of HoD).
  • Have overall responsibility for the promotion and observance of a healthy and safe working environment for the technical support staff, teachers and students.
  • Take the lead in the design, development and maintenance of specialist resources and/or long-term projects, including setting up and caring for plant and animal collections.
  • Prepare standard solutions, purifying chemicals, treating waste.
  • Ensure the availability of suitable materials and equipment and keep up-to-date stock records.
  • Order new materials and equipment and manage the departmental budget. Obtain the necessary materials by local purchase.
  • Ensure that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repairing of equipment are carried out to the required standard.
  • Act as cover teacher in the cover rota schedule (only in Science with permission of HoD) provided not needed elsewhere for practical work/supervision/assistance as described above.
  • Attend department and curriculum meetings when appropriate.

Terms of Employment / Remuneration

  • You will get a contract of employment under Dutch law: the initial contract is for 1 year, Starting 1-10-2024 or as soon as possible. The worktimes are divided over the week. The contract is part time; for 0.8 of a full time position meaning on average 4 days a week. Support staff have 450 hours of leave per year on a full time basis, according to the Collective Labour Agreement for Secondary schools (CAO-VO).
  • The package will be commensurate with the responsibilities of the position, according to the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Secondary Education (CAO-VO). The applicable pay scale is scale 8 in the CAO-VO, between € 2683,- and € 4055,- gross per month for a full time position, depending on relevant experience.
  • Participation in the school’s pension plan via the ABP Retirement/Pension Fund.
  • Support in the application for the ‘30% Facility for Incoming Employees’ with the Dutch Tax Authorities (if relevant).
  • Location: UWC Maastricht, the Netherlands.

To be able to work in the Netherlands, a (foreign) staff member must be able to successfully apply for:
