The new colleague will participate fully as a team member in the academic department of English (LL) and within the whole school. At UWC Maastricht every teacher is considered to be part of the pastoral care structure. Education degree and professional experience

  • At least a Completed Master degree as a Teacher of English Language & Literature. A degree in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is not sufficient for this vacancy.
  • (International) Teaching Qualification / Certificate, like a Bachelor or Master in Education or QTS with induction, that qualifies for accreditation according to the Dutch educational system.
  • Successful experience as a teacher in an international IB school is preferred.
  • A passion for teaching language and literature is essential.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide effective teaching and learning to students participating in the subject area.
  • Ensuring that lessons are based on clear learning objectives and that all students make progress.
  • Employ best practices for teaching students, including inquiry and problem based learning, scaffolding, book ending, frequent review and feedback and differentiated instruction whilst creating an inclusive and welcoming environment.
  • Establish a positive and aspiring classroom environment that best enables a diverse group of students to flourish whilst recognising the different needs of students based on their linguistic, historical, cultural and socio-economic experiences.
  • Plan and deliver lessons and other learning activities, maintaining a purposeful and calm atmosphere in the classroom and other learning areas.
  • Liaise with other colleagues to deliver units of work in a collaborative way and contribute to the production and preparation of schemes of work.
  • Set targets for student attainment levels using prior achievement data.
  • Supervise Extended Essays as and when required.
  • Assess, record and report on student performance, maintaining rigorous and accurate records, including students’ attainment, attendance, homework set and outline lesson plans.
  • Mark and return work in line with the assessment policy, including feedback for improvement and progress for each student.
  • Provide assessment reports within the assessment cycle and when specifically requested.
  • Ensure that suitably differentiated material and learning pathways are provided to challenge all students at the appropriate level, regardless of their ability.

Terms of Employment
You will get a temporary contract of employment under Dutch law: the initial contract is from August 1, 2024 until August 1, 2025. After a positive appraisal and after your Dutch teaching certificate has been granted by DUO, your temporary contract will be extended with one more year before we decide on a permanent contract. The salary is accroding to the Collective Labour Agreement of Secondary Schools (CAO-VO) placed in LB with a minimum of € 3301,- and a maximum of € 5030,- gross per month, based on relevant experience.

To be able to work in the Netherlands, a (foreign) staff member must be able to successfully apply for:
✔ Residence and work permits for the Netherlands.
✔ A Dutch VOG (certificate of good conduct).
