MYP SERVICE AS ACTION AT UWC MAASTRICHT
Service as Action and the IB Middle Years Programme
Action (learning by doing and experiencing) is a core component of International Baccalaureate programmes. Service, as a subset of action, is a shared value of the IB world community. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.
The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community. This continues into the Diploma Program through the DP’s creativity, action, service (CAS) requirements.
The MYP identifies seven learning outcomes for service as action:
- Become more aware of their strengths and areas for growth
- Undertake challenges that develop new skills
- Discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities
- Persevere in action
- Work collaboratively with others
- Develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding
- Consider the ethical implications of their actions
These learning outcomes are closely associated with the IB learner profile attributes, ATL skills and the UWC Values. Through their participation in service, students can become more confident, self-regulated learners. In MYP5, fulfillment of the school’s expectations for participation in community service is a requirement of the IB MYP certificate.
The Service as Action Programme for MYP Years 1-5
The Service as Action programme at UWC Maastricht aims to develop students who meet the learning outcomes for service as action, and prepare students for the high demands of the UWC CAS programme in the DP years and active UWC alumni in the future. In order to enable students to learn the skills needed to participate in responsible action in a variety of communities, UWC Maastricht runs a Service as Action program with the following themes and outcomes for each year group:
MYP1 - Service
Through a community partnership with the CNME organization, students will explore the different ways in which they can serve in the local community to improve the environment. Activities may include building bird boxes and insect hotels, river clean up, and work on an outdoor education site.
MYP2 - Diversity
Through a partnership with the Adelante school, students will explore diversity by working with students who are differently abled from them. The students each have a buddy at Adelante who they work with, and they will develop activities and games to do with their partners at the school.
MYP3 - Community
Students complete the MYP Community Project. In this project, students conduct research to determine a need in the school or local community; Working individually or in teams of up to 3 students, they will design an action plan to address the community need, implement the plan, and then reflect on their impact. This project will be assessed against the IB criteria for the Community Project.
MYP4 - Sustainability
Through a combination of lessons and experiential opportunities, students learn about sustainability and practices that support a sustainable future. At the end of the year, students apply their knowledge by planning and implementing a sustainability project.
MYP5 - Peace
Students learn about global initiatives, such as the sustainable development goals. Students then use this knowledge to plan and implement an awareness-raising campaign on an issue of their choice. Following the campaign, students work towards planning and participating in a Project Week at the end of the school year.
This Service as Action program runs alongside and supports additional opportunities for Service as Action that arise from the MYP curriculum.
