UWC Maastricht Alumni

Olaya Romero Escudero, from Spain but a resident in the Netherlands, is fully immersed in the God Sibouche Foundation project which Math teacher Bernard Weda started with students while he was at UWC Maastricht about five years ago.

Last July Olaya and other alumni and friends travelled to Kenya, with suitcases full of clothes for the people Olaya met in Migori two years ago. She travelled with her heart full with enthusiasm and by then the 5000€ collected had already been transferred to fund the project.

Olaya took with her also the wonderful construction plans for the girls' residence in the God Sibouche School. These plans have been developed by a Spanish young architect who  working on them in her free time as a volunteer.

The goal of the team travelling to Migori was to organise the initial steps of the construction of the residence for girls. Due to different reasons, none of the current UWC Maastricht DP students could travel with her this year. For months Olaya and the team members had been saving money from their student jobs to pay their flight tickets themselves.

The team was finally welcomed by Mr. Weda's family in Migori.

A teacher told us about this project in particular: "I would like to highlight that we might be doing something well in the school as solidarity, consistency and engagement, the values that we teach, are also a big part of the lives of some of our alumni."
